Dental Implants can be used to replace single or multiple lost teeth. They can also replace or anchor dentures when all teeth are missing or are so badly damaged that the long term prognosis is not good.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a small man-made titanium screw that serves as a replacement for the root portion of a missing natural tooth. The implant is placed in the bone of the upper or lower jaw and allowed to form a biological bond with the bone. This gives the same stable foundation as a natural tooth.

What are the benefits?

  1. Preserve facial structure by stopping deterioration of the jaw.
  2. Restore the mouth as closely as possible to its natural state.
  3. Increase comfort by eliminating loose fitting dentures.
  4. Adjacent teeth may not have to be prepared.
  5. Improve appearance.

How many teeth can be replaced by implants?

Implants can be used to replace a single lost tooth or many missing teeth, even a complete set. They may also be used as retainers to stop full dentures moving when eating/talking. Implant supported teeth look, feel and function like natural teeth.

Would I need an implant to replace each missing tooth?

No, unless a single tooth is being replaced. Normally 6 implants would replace 10 to 12 teeth in the lower jaw. In the upper 6-10 would be used to replace 12 teeth. Where a few teeth are missing, 2 or 3 implants will suffice. Extra implants may have to be placed if patients grind/clench their teeth while asleep.

Can implants always be used to replace missing teeth?

It depends on the state of your jaw. A number of special tests may have to be done to assess the amount and density of bone available. It may not be possible to place implants without grafting bone to the area first.

Are implants safe? How long will they last?

Implants are a well established (>40years), tried and tested treatment. 95% per cent of implants should last for many years. I use the Noble Biocare system which has research data going back 35 years. Each implant used with this system has the components guaranteed for 10 years. The TiUnite type coating on these titanium implants aids the integration of bone around the implant.

Is placing implants painful?

Placing implants requires a small operation. This is carried out under local anaesthetic. The placement is therefore painless. After the operation some patients do experience minor discomfort. Pre and post operative medication is given to aid a more comfortable recovery. Most discomfort is due to stitches which are removed 1 week later.

How long will it take?

Planning the treatment is the most crucial stage. Planning stages take around 2-3 weeks, and includes a case presentation where I will discuss every aspect of your treatment at length before beginning. You are welcome to bring a family member or friend along. Implant treatment can vary from 4-6 months up to about 2 years depending on complexity.

How long will it last?

Most will last for over 25 years, however certain types will only last around 10 years depending on a number of factors including bone loss. Current research indicates that lower teeth have a success rate of 95% over 15 years. Upper teeth 75% over 15 years.

Will I have gaps during treatment?

Proper planning allows for the provision of a denture or a removable bridge, so that patients will be able to function normally. After surgery however there may be discomfort, when wearing a denture due to swelling.

What happens if the implant does not bond (integrate) with the bone?

This happens very rarely. If the implant becomes loose during the healing or just after, then it is easily removed and healing takes place in the normal way. Once the jaw has healed, another implant can be placed there.

Is the treatment expensive?

Unfortunately it can be.  A full written estimate of cost will be given in all cases. However over the long term, implants can be a more cost effective and satisfactory option. An implant to replace a single tooth avoids the need to cut down the adjacent teeth either side for crowns to support a bridge. Normal dentures often mean you cannot eat or speak well, due to the dentures moving about. With implants they will be anchored to the bone just like teeth are.

Please book an appointment at reception, if you wish to have more information. I will only be too happy to answer any questions and show you some pictures.
